Atlanta African American Heritage Tour
Atlanta is long recognized as a city of African-American history and achievement. Many prominent African-Americans, past and present, have close ties to the city: Martin Luther King, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, Hank Aaron, Muhammed Ali, and the list goes on and on. Indeed, much of the city's history has impacted the world
Legacy Tours follows the trail of Atlanta's African-American history while illuminating black life and achievement in the city from pre-Civil War to the present day. We welcome the opportunity to share this unique historical excursion with you.
Relax in a comfortable motor coach as you tour the historical landmarks of our legacy. Our tour begins with a drive down historic Auburn Avenue, once considered the richest Black street in the world. Visit the Martin Luther King National Historic District. See Dr. King's tomb, Ebenezer Baptist Church and Dr. King's birth home, and various historic exhibits.
Our journey continues to the Atlanta University Center. Comprised of seven colleges and universities, the center is the largest black educational complex in the world. See Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark/Atlanta University, Morris Brown College, the Morehouse School of Medicine and the Interdenominational Theological Center.
You will surely delight in a visit to the Alonzo Herndon House Museum, a Greek Revival Style mansion built in 1905 by Atlanta's first black millionaire. There you will learn about Mr. Herndon's amazing rise from slavery to great wealth.
Atlanta is also known for its beautiful homes and breath taking landscapes. African-Americans have developed some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the nation. Our tour showcases Atlanta's African-American neighborhoods and highlights the homes of our leading citizens.
The tour may be designed to include additional African-American attractions: The Apex Museum, the African-American Griot Teaching Museum, the Hammond House, the Wren's Nest, and the Shrine of the Black Madonna Bookstore.
